Web development for small business: the complete 2026 guide

A pillar guide so you can make informed decisions about your site — from picking the right type to avoiding the most common traps in the market.

If you are about to spend between 350 and 2,000 dollars on a website, it pays to understand exactly what you are buying. This guide sums up everything we have learned building sites for businesses in fields as different as tourism, professional services, retail and logistics.

The 5 types of site that cover 95% of businesses

  1. 1Landing page (one page): ideal for professional services, freelancers and events.
  2. 2Corporate site (5–10 pages with a CMS): for established companies showing services, team and case studies.
  3. 3Ecommerce (catalog and cart): to sell online taking card payments.
  4. 4Platform with user accounts (login, dashboard): for SaaS, scheduling and memberships.
  5. 5Custom app: for complex proprietary workflows that nothing off the shelf solves.

What does a good website look like in 2026?

  • ·Lighthouse 90+ on mobile — Core Web Vitals affect SEO directly.
  • ·Mobile-first: across Latin America the bulk of traffic arrives from a phone.
  • ·HTTPS enforced, security headers, no mixed content.
  • ·GA4, GTM and conversion events configured from day one.
  • ·Baseline Schema.org: Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage.
  • ·WhatsApp and Google Business Profile integration.
  • ·Under 2.5s LCP on mobile over 3G or 4G.

The local integrations that actually matter

What separates an agency that knows your market from a generic template is the local integrations. These are the ones almost every client asks for:

  • ·Stripe, Mercado Pago, PayPal or whichever gateway dominates in your country — take payment where your customer already trusts.
  • ·Your invoicing system or ERP, whether that is a local electronic invoicing provider or an international SaaS.
  • ·WhatsApp Business API and Cloud API: in Latin America people sell over WhatsApp long before email.
  • ·Google Maps configured properly by coverage area — outside the big cities, geocoding fails often.

Realistic timelines (without the "all of it in 3 days" lie)

Type of siteRealisticAggressive"Smoke"
Landing page7–14 days5 days24h
Corporate site15–30 days3–5 days24h
Ecommerce30–60 days20–30 days7 days

Be wary of anyone quoting times in the "smoke" column. It usually means a template with the logo swapped, or work shipped without testing.

Maintenance: the cost nobody explains when quoting

A website is not a one-time purchase — it is an ongoing operation. Hosting, SSL, domain, backups, security updates, minor tweaks, uptime monitoring. Budget between $30 and $150 USD a month depending on the type of site. If your quote does not mention maintenance, it is incomplete.

How we organize it at Sova

We work with published prices: websites from $249 USD + taxes (one-time), Google Ads management from $149 USD + taxes per month, and custom software quoted per project. For anyone just starting there is the Emprende plan ($39 USD/month) and the Crece plan ($69 USD/month), which bundle the site, domain, hosting and support into one monthly fee.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a typical small business project take?

A serious landing page takes 7–14 days. A corporate site, 15–30 days. An ecommerce, 30–60 days. Shorter timelines usually mean a template rather than custom development.

What happens with the code and the domain?

We hand over all the source code and the domain is registered in your name from day one. We do not do lock-in. If you ever leave, you take everything with you.

Where should the site be hosted?

The best setup is a server in your audience’s region — Latin America or North America for Spanish-speaking audiences in the Americas — plus a CDN in front. Hosting in Europe only makes sense if your visitors are there.
