Wix, WordPress or custom development: which one fits a small business

The fight is not Wix vs WordPress. It is: how dependent is your selling on the site? Here is a simple framework to choose without a salesperson rushing you.

Spoiler: no option is "the best". The right question is not Wix vs WordPress vs custom — it is how much the site weighs in your business. If your main channel is word of mouth, Wix is enough. If your site takes quote requests, bookings or sales, that changes everything.

When Wix or Squarespace makes sense

Wix works if you need a minimum professional presence, your team is not technical, and you will update content yourself regularly. It is the right answer for a neighborhood bakery, an independent therapist or a founder validating an idea. The honest limit: you will hit a ceiling on performance and technical SEO, and moving off it later means rebuilding.

When WordPress is the smart choice

WordPress shines when you have an active blog, you do content SEO, or your team publishes often. The editor’s learning curve is manageable and the plugin ecosystem solves nearly any need. The trap: it is only "free" until you add managed hosting, premium plugins and the monthly maintenance that keeps it from breaking.

When custom development is worth it

  • ·When your site has its own workflows: quoting, bookings, a client portal, integrations with your ERP or CRM.
  • ·When performance matters for SEO or conversion (Lighthouse 95+ is hard to reach on templates).
  • ·When your brand needs a distinctive look and you do not want it to "look like another Wix site".
  • ·When you expect to scale: 1,000 visits today, 50,000 in 12 months.
  • ·When you already have traction and the site is your main sales channel.

A decision framework in 3 questions

  1. 1How much direct or indirect revenue does my site generate today, or will it generate in 12 months? If the answer is "under $1,000 in total", Wix is fine. If it is "tens of thousands", you need more.
  2. 2How unique is my workflow? If it is generic (show information, receive messages), template. If it is specific (quote, book, manage users), custom.
  3. 3Do I have someone who updates content regularly? If yes, WordPress. If nobody is going to touch the site for six months, it hardly matters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate from Wix to custom development later?

Yes, but the content gets migrated by hand (Wix does not export cleanly). The SEO is rebuilt. The 301 redirects are critical so you do not lose rankings. Budget the migration as its own project, not as a freebie.

Is WordPress secure?

If you keep it updated and use plugins from trustworthy sources, yes. If you go six months without updating, no. The vast majority of WordPress hacks are avoided by keeping updates current and running a basic firewall.

How long does custom development take?

A serious custom landing page: 2–4 weeks. A corporate site with a CMS: 4–8 weeks. An app or platform: 2–6 months depending on complexity. Be wary of anyone promising "all of it in 3 days".
